This series on “Molecular Genetics and Genomics of Blood Group Systems” is edited by Dr. Yann Fichou from Etablissement français du sang (EFS) – Bretagne, Brest, France. This special series aims to provide an up-to-date overview of the current knowledge in the molecular genetics of a subset of clinically relevant blood group systems, to present the recent major discoveries in the field, and to discuss the challenges of molecular diagnostics, as well as the genetic polymorphism at the population-scale level.

After education and training at the University of Rennes (UR1, Rennes, France) and the University of Vermont (UVM, Burlington, VT), Dr. Fichou received his PhD degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Brest (UBO, Brest, France) in 2006. He conducted his post-doctoral research at the Cochin Institute (Paris, France) from 2008 to 2010, where he worked on the molecular basis and pathophysiology of genetic diseases, and acquired experience in functional genetics.
Dr. Fichou was hired by the French Blood Centre, namely EFS, in 2011 and works currently as a Senior Research Scientist in the UMR1078 Research Unit (Inserm, EFS, UBO) in Brest, France. His work has focused on blood group genetics, with a specific interest in the molecular, epidemiological and functional genetics of the Rh blood group system.
Dr. Fichou has published several reviews and research articles in this field in international peer-reviewed journals, including the British Journal of Haematology, Transfusion, Blood Transfusion and Transfusion, Medicine and Hemotherapy, and has been a reviewer for numerous journals in life sciences and transfusion medicine.
