Joan Cid, MD, PhD, is a hematologist in the Department of Hemotherapy and Hemostasis at the Hospital Clinic, located in Barcelona, Spain. He earned his medical degree at the "Universitat Rovira i Virgili" in Reus (Tarragona, Spain), and received training in Hematology and Hemotherapy at the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona. He earned a doctorate degree "cum laude" in Medicine and Surgery in 2003 at the University of Barcelona.

Dr. Cid worked on the "Blood and Tissue Bank" of Catalonia from 1999 to 2007 in the areas of blood donation and blood transfusion, therapeutic apheresis, and in the preparation of blood components. He then worked at the University Hospital Joan XXIII in Tarragona, in the laboratory of hematology and hemostasis. In early 2010, he joined the Department of Hemotherapy and Hemostasis at the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona.

Dr. Cid is a member of eight national and international hemotherapy societies, is a Joint Accreditation Committee ISCT-EBMT (JACIE) Inspector since 2014, and he has been secretary of the "Catalano-Balearic Society of Blood Transfusion" and member of the Board of the "Spanish Society of Blood Transfusion”. He has authored or coauthored more than 50 papers, monographs, and book chapters related to transfusion medicine, and he is a frequent speaker at national and international meetings and conferences. He is co-editor of a book published by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) in 2011 on methods of preparation of blood components.
